Where generative AI actually pays off in logistics operations
Skip the hype. These are the logistics processes where AI delivers value today, and the ones worth waiting on.
Every logistics leader has heard the promise of AI. The harder question is where it pays off today, with the data and systems you already have.
The clearest wins are in document-heavy work. Bills of lading, commercial invoices and delivery notes arrive as PDFs and scans, and someone usually types the data into another system. Modern document AI can read these documents, extract the key fields and flag anything it is unsure about. The work shifts from typing to reviewing exceptions.
The second area is routing and triage. Shared mailboxes fill with booking requests, queries and updates. AI can classify each message, pull out the reference numbers and route it to the right team or workflow, which shortens response times without adding headcount.
The third is insight. Operational data already sits in your systems, but few people have time to study it. AI-assisted dashboards can highlight unusual dwell times, cost changes or volume shifts, so managers see what changed instead of searching for it.
Where should you be cautious? Fully autonomous decisions on pricing, customs or exceptions still need human judgement. The best results come from AI that does the reading and sorting, while people make the calls.
Our advice is to start with one document-heavy process, measure the time spent on it today, and run a focused pilot. If you would like help choosing that first process, talk to us.
